Awards & Recognition

The Kentucky Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognizes excellence within the Dietetics profession through Honors and Awards.  An individual can be nominated for awards by another person, but may also nominate themselves.  Below you will find information about each honor/award recognized by KAND:


NDEP 2017 Outstanding Dietetic Educator Award

Due Date: January 4, 2017

The Outstanding Dietetics Educator Award program recognizes the teaching, mentoring, and leadership activities of faculty in ACEND-accredited dietetics education programs.  One educator for each type of dietetics education program (Didactic Program in Dietetics, Dietetic Internship, and Coordinated Program) in the state will be recognized.

Please Note: Preceptors are not eligible for this award as there is a separate award given to Outstanding Preceptors.  Active NDEP Council Members and previous ODEA winners are not eligible for this award.

The Kentucky award winner will be recognized at the 2017 KAND FNCE in Owensboro, KY.  The list of outstanding educators will be published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and NDEP-line, and each awardee will receive a certificate and congratulatory letter from the Academy President.  Awards will be presented at the NDEP area meetings for educators each spring.

Criteria for Selection of Outstanding Educators:

  1. Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

  2. Faculty with academic appointments in ACEND-accredited dietetics education programs.

  3. Demonstrated innovative teaching skills and techniques.

  4. Demonstrated mentoring as documented by letters from students and/or peers (limit three letters per nominee).

  5. Demonstrated leadership; e.g., national, state, or district dietetic association activities, community service, honors received, scientific and professional presentations, publications, employment, etc.

Each nomination should include:

  1. An application cover letter

  3. Resume

  4. Three letters of reference

Emerging Dietetic Leader (EDL)

Due Date: February 15, 2017

This award was established by the 1996 Academy Board of Directors.  The EDL recognizes the competence and activities of members, regardless of their age, who are at the beginning of their dietetics careers.  Members who receive this honor support the promotion of optimal health and nutritional status of the public through demonstrating leadership in legislation, research, education, management and other areas related to the profession.

The Kentucky award winner will be recognized at the 2017 KAND FNCE in Owensboro, KY..  The list of EDL winners will be published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and each awardee will receive a congratulatory letter and certificate signed by the President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Criteria for Selection:

  1. Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

  2. Initial practice experience not less than 5 years and not greater than 10 years.  Interrupted careers or time periods not in practice, are not to be considered or rationed into the 5-10 years of professional practice experience.

  3. Active participation in the national, state, or district association for at least 5 years.

  4. Is a Registered Dietitian, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist or Dietetic Technician, Registered.

  5. Not previously selected as an RYDY or RDTY.

  6. Demonstrated concern for the promotion of optimal health and nutritional status of the population.

  7. Demonstrated leadership, e.g., in legislation, research, education, management, etc., in the Association, community or employment.

Outstanding Dietetic Student Award (ODSA)

Due Date: February 15, 2017

The ODSA recognizes the emerging leadership and achievement of students in ACEND-accredited and approved dietetics education programs and encourage their participation in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  One student for each type of dietetics education program (Didactic Program in Dietetics, Dietetic Internship, and Coordinated Program) in the state will be recognized.

  4. Demonstrated leadership and professional potential; e.g., honors, student dietetic association activities, community service activities, etc.

Outstanding Dietitian of the Year (ODY)

Due Date: February 15, 2017

The ODY is the affiliate’s top member award.  It recognizes the commitment to excellence made by an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the profession.

The Kentucky award winner will be recognized at the 2017 KAND FNCE in Owensboro, KY.  The list of ODY winners will be published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and each awardee will receive a congratulatory letter and certificate signed by the President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Criteria for Selection:

  1. Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  2. Active participation in the national, state, or district association
  3. Is a Registered Dietitian, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, or Dietetic Technician, Registered
  4. Not previously selected for this award
  5. Demonstrated leadership, e.g., in legislation, research, education, management, etc., in the Association, community or employment.

Recognized Diet Technician of the Year (RDTY)

Due Date: February 15, 2017

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognizes the professional contributions of dietetic technicians and encourages their continued participation in the community and Academy activities.  Award recipients demonstrate leadership qualities and performance in the Academy or their employment through education, clinical nutrition, foodservice management, public relations, career guidance and legislation.

The Kentucky award winner will be recognized at the 2017 KAND FNCE in Owensboro, KY.  This list of RDTY winners will be published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and each awardee will receive a congratulatory letter and certificate signed by the president of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Criteria for Selection:

  1. Active membership in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  2. Is a Dietetic Technician, Registered.
  3. Active participation in national, affiliate, or district association.
  4. Not previously selected for this award.
  5. Demonstrated concern for the promotion of optimal health and nutritional status of the population.
  6. Demonstrated leadership, e.g., legislation, research, education, clinical dietetics, food service management, public relations, career guidance, etc., in the association or employment.

Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year (RYDY)

Due Date: February 15, 2017

The RYDY recognizes the competence and activities of younger dietitians in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and encourage their continued participation in Academy affairs.  This group will be an additional resource from which the leadership of the Academy will develop – at the district, state, and national levels.

The Kentucky award winner will be recognized at the 2017 KAND FNCE in Owensboro, KY.  The list of RYDY winner will be published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and each awardee will receive a congratulatory letter and certificate signed by the president of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Criteria for Selection:

  1. Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  2. Age limit as of May 1, 2016, 35 years or younger.
  3. Active participation in the national, state, or district association.
  4. Is a Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.
  5. Not previously selected as RYDY.
  6. Demonstrated concern for the promotion of optimal health and nutritional status of the population.
  7. Demonstrated leadership, e.g., in legislation, research, education, management, etc., either in the Association or employment.

Lyn Fleming Scholarship

Due Date: February 15, 2017

The Lyn Fleming Scholarship from KAND recognizes academic scholarship of a Senior level or Graduate student in an ACEND-accredited and approved dietetics education program and encourages his or her participation in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The Kentucky award winner will be recognized at the 2017 KAND FNCE in Owensboro, KY on March 24-25, 2016.  A scholarship in the amount of $400.00 will be provided to the student once acceptance into an accredited program is confirmed.

Criteria for Selection:

  1. Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics by January 1, 2016.  Students must supply their membership number.
  2. Student enrolled in ACEND-accredited dietetics education program (CP, DPD) in Kentucky.
    1. Must be eligible for and planning to apply to an accredited dietetic internship, graduate program or a student in a coordinated program (senior year) leading to CDR registration.
  3. Demonstrated academic achievement (GPA of 3.0 or higher) as documented by an Official Transcript.
  4. Demonstrated leadership and professional potential as documented by two letters of reference; e.g., honors, student dietetic association activities, community service activities, etc.
  5. Preferably a resident of Kentucky.
    1. Application (See Below)
    2. Official Transcript through Fall Semester prior to February 15, 2016
    3. Two (2) letters of reference from educators, dietetic professionals, or employers (if dietetics related).  One letter must be from an advisor or major professor in dietetics.
    4. Declaration of Intent (if undergraduate) or Verification Statement (if graduated) from an accredited DPD or CP signed by the Director (Attached: Declaration.of.Intent.Form.doc)
    5. Short biography (500 words or less)
    6. A letter from the applicant, not to exceed 2 pages, stating:
      1. Immediate and future goals
      2. Extracurricular participation and dietetics associated employment/volunteer work

Iva Alexander Scholarship

Due Date: February 15, 2017

The Iva Alexander Scholarship from KAND recognizes academic scholarship of a Senior level or Graduate student in an ACEND-accredited and approved dietetics education program with demonstrated financial need and encourages his or her participation in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The Kentucky award winner will be recognized at the 2017 KAND FNCE in Owensboro, KY.  A scholarship in the amount of $400.00 will be provided to the student once acceptance into an accredited program is confirmed.

Criteria for Selection:

  1. Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics by January 1, 2017.  Students must supply their membership number.
  2. Student enrolled in ACEND-accredited dietetics education program (CP, DPD) in Kentucky.

National Honors and Awards

Due Date: March 1, 2017

In addition to state award, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognizes outstanding food and nutrition practitioners and supporters of the profession through its National Honors and Awards program.  Don’t miss the chance to honor those who have advanced the profession, exhibited leadership and shown devotion to serving others in both dietetics and allied fields.

You may submit nominations entirely online.  The submission deadline is midnight Central Standard Time on March 1, 2017.  Award recipients will be announced in May 2017 and recognized at the Academy’s 2017 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo.
